What Is the Story About?
A bored detective Mahimchandra (Anirban Bhattacharya) wants something exciting in his life. He has a beautiful wife Sudha (Ishaa Saha) but is always lost in the world of detective novels and crime fiction. What happens when unknowingly Mahi starts following his wife’s ex-lover in his quest for thrill and where it ends is what the movie is all about?
Performances?
Anirban Bhattacharya looks fine for the curious and enthusiastic part of the character. But, he fails to bring the charisma and drama in proper proportions. Then there is also the track with wife which needs an emotional underpinning. In this aspect, too, Anirban fails to evoke the right expression.
Basically, Anirban Bhattacharya fails to rise above the mediocre script and overall mediocrity. He just goes with the flow and doesn’t make anything memorable to worthwhile to remember.
Analysis
Joydeep Mukherjee handles the direction for Detective. It is terrible. The story is decent, and there is a lot happening plot movement-wise, but the director fails in presenting a convincing and engaging narrative.
The opening with a dream sequence in London sets the mood perfectly for everything that could go wrong in the movie. The set work and visual effects are shoddy. The humour is all over the place and doesn’t work. The satires fail, and everything looks irritating. When we get to the actual narrative, nothing changes.
Everything related to the office work and the ‘detective’ track is boringly executed. Maybe the director wanted to convey the boredom, but instead of expressing it, he showcases it. The major problem, of course, is the writing and utter disastrous result in showing the goofy humour on screen.
What provides a glimmer of hope in the on-going mess is the wife and her equation with the lead (who is going through a duality of husband and detective). There are a few small moments that are predictable but still hit the right notes. But, they are little, far and few.
The biggest problem with Detective is the muddled and meandering narrative. It moves from satire and sarcastic tones to serious patriotic drama involving independence struggle. Then like said above, there are the husband and wife tangle with an additional ex-lover trail thrown in.
What gets the narrative further entangled is the detective track involving the current husband and ex-lover. It is terribly executed and gives a messy feeling. The multi-genre mixture gives a cacophonous sense.
All of it could still be given a pass had there been some thrill or fun in the narrative. Sadly, there is none on that score, at all.
Overall, Detective is a meandering narrative that is all over the place, providing no fun or thrill. It is a disaster execution wise, and the poor acting drowns the whole affair. Give it a miss. You wouldn’t miss much.
Other Artists?
Detective comprises of many artists. Some have short, and some are lengthy, but they all have predictability in common. Among the predictable ones, Ishaa Saha stands out with her old world charm and beauty. She is fine in her part. Ambarish Bhattacharya with a Watson like a character is likeable. Saheb Bhattacharjee is sincere in his portrayal but gets repetitive soon. It also comes across poorly written towards the end. Trina Saha should have been utilized well. The rest are okay with a serial like act.
Music and Other Departments?
Joy Sarkar provides the music which adds to the lengthy feeling of the movie. The background score is weak overall, barring the parts involving the husband and wife drama. The cinematography is terrible. For a film like Detective, the artwork is of high prominence is generating a feel of a bygone era. Detective fails utterly in this aspect. The editing brings about a messy feeling to the narrative. The writing is below par and lacks depth. It falls flat in carrying the silly and goofy humour that is a key and essential aspect for the whole thing to work.
